Sonya Monts, BA, RDE, CiDE
Sonya Monts is the owner of The Dancer's Extension in Saluda, NC where she teaches ballet, pointe, jazz, contemporary and creative movement to ages three through adult. She is also the dance teaching artist for Polk County (NC) schools. She holds a Magna Cum Laude and Cum Honore Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia College (SC), and earned her Certificate in Dance Education through the National Dance Education Organization's Online Professional Development Program in December 2015. She has 35 years of dance experience, with 20 years in dance education, including solo and group choreography, workshops through the public library systems and liturgical dance within The United Methodist Church. Sonya was accepted as a National Registered Dance Educator (RDE) in April 2014 after evaluation of her teaching portfolio by the review committee. She is a member of the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) and a chapter sponsor for the National Honor Society of Dance Arts (NHSDA). She is currently mentoring six students towards induction in the NHSDA. Committed to advocacy for the art of dance, she is a contributing author to the Journal of Dance Education in Practice. Sonya is also a member of the Saluda Business Association. She is married with two children and a cat, and is happy to call Saluda, NC home.
